The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Today Luke, Kendal, Noah and Ryan did a play for the class and for their parents - the Three Billy Goats Gruff! Noah was the troll and had an amazing mask which his Dad made. Ryan, Luke and Kendal were the billy goats and they were such awesome actors!

Which one is Noah?

African Drumming Workshop

King Marong from Gambia came to visit us on Tuesday and teach us some African drumming, chants and dances. He plays the djembe drum and brought 50 more drums for us to have a go on.

The video isn't uploading...I'll try and add it later :-)

Our weaving

In maths last week we learned about patterns in weaving - and we learned to weave a mat and a kete. Here are some of our creative weavers showing off their work...

This week we are looking at patterns in Maori kowhaiwhai - here's a website with some examples to check out at home (scroll down a bit).

This movie shows some excerpts from our practices for an assembly item for 'Paint it All Black Day' at Freeville School.
We decided to show our support for the All Blacks by being:
- All Black supporters
- All Blacks doing the haka
- All Black cheerleaders
- All Blacks playing rugby

Glen and Jack (LT4) filmed us and made this movie for us.

Happy holidays!

How is your holiday going?

Nicole is getting ready to go to Timaru to visit her family and to go to her nephew's 21st...and probably doing lots of packing and thinking about what to take to Hawaii and Alaska!

Diane is in Australia visiting her family and hopefully missing out on our cold weather...

Tracy and her family have been on a holiday to the Marlborough Sounds where they saw lots of different fish and ate some kaimoana.

We didn't eat this crab though...he was a bit little.

Next week they are going to Auckland to see How to Train Your Dragon. There might be some Freeville families there too!

If you want, you can email Tracy about your holiday (and maybe include a photo) and we can share it here on the blog. :-)

Have a great time!

Ruma Tuarua: rubbish collectors!

For our statistics this week we have been collecting very yucky data: we have spent two days picking up rubbish around the school.
Some rubbish was even in the top of the bushes!

We found a lot of rubbish, but we realised that it wasn't very much considering we spent two days finding it around the entire school...
We have been sorting it into piles:
  • chip packets
  • moosie and juicy wrappers
  • other plastic (like spoons, other wrappers, gladwrap)
  • food rubbish - apple cores, orange peels
  • garden stuff like bark or leaves
  • foil wrappers
  • paper rubbish
  • other/miscellaneous
The children have decided we need to get rid of rubbish in our school -- and we don't want to pick it all up ourselves! So we are going to write a notice to go around the school and make some signs and stick them up in places where people eat their lunch...to say that we are Freeville Flyers who care for our school and we don't litter!

If your child is keen to challenge themselves at home in maths, try:

It asks for you to set up an account but you don't need to; just choose the maths your child is working on. They can compete in real time against other children around the world!

Moustache Maths...?

This week in maths Ruma Tuarua has been looking fab! We have been working on being data detectives. We know that data is another word for "information". We made our own data by dressing up in crazy outfits and taking photos of everyone. When they were printed and laminated they became our data.

We tried lots of different ways of sorting them into groups. Some examples are:
  • boys and girls
  • people wearing party hats or no party hats
  • people with party hats and sunglasses
  • sorting by the colour of the party hat
  • people wearing one item, two items or three items
When we sorted the data into different groups we used our detective skills to find clues in the data. We used words like more, fewer, most, least, popular, unpopular. Next week we're going to put our detective skills to the test...stay tuned!

Buddy frog stories

On Thursday at Buddy Time Ruma Tuarua and their LT4 buddies wrote about our new frogs. (Have you noticed a trend on the blog lately?) Here are some of the stories our buddies wrote with us...

At the moment there are two frogs in room 2. They are really good swimmers but the cage smells really bad. Their names are Aogan and Alex.

Hi my name is Chloe, I’m in room 2 at Freeville School and today I am going to talk to you about the new Frogs that we have in our class.
These frogs of ours are called Tadpoles which means they are baby Frogs. The tadpoles are bright green with grey stripes and they are very tiny.
I like that the frogs are cute, the colour of them (bright green) and I also like their eyes and their grey stripes.

The two frogs

The slimy little things in room 2 are just babies and they really like to hop around the tank all day long until they don’t want to any more. Ryan told me that they started in a egg then turned into a tadpole then into a slimy thing that just makes noises and stares at us all day its so freaky. The end.

Our two frogs
We have two frogs. They are light green and very slimy. They are very little. They like to eat flies. They can jump really high and they can climb up the walls of the tank .They can also swim. In their tank, there are logs, plants and some cold water.
